In dry-mix mortar, tile adhesive, plastering mortar, exterior wall systems, and cement-based waterproofing materials, water penetration is one of the main reasons behind long-term performance failure. Once moisture enters the mortar through capillary pores, it may lead to efflorescence, freeze-thaw damage, salt migration, surface whitening, coating peeling, and reduced durability.
For this reason, choosing the right water repellent additive is not only a matter of formulation cost. It directly affects the final quality, service life, and market competitiveness of building materials.
At present, two common hydrophobic additives are widely used in cement-based systems: calcium stearate and silicone-based water repellent powder. Although both can improve water resistance to some extent, their working mechanisms and long-term performance are quite different.
Calcium Stearate: A Traditional Low-Cost Hydrophobic Additive
Calcium stearate is a traditional fatty acid salt water repellent. Its hydrophobic effect mainly comes from the fatty acid chain, which covers part of the capillary pore surface and reduces water absorption.
However, this effect is mainly physical. Calcium stearate has relatively limited dispersibility in mortar systems, and when the dosage is too high, it may interfere with normal cement hydration. In some formulations, this can cause lower compressive strength and unstable long-term water resistance.
For basic or low-cost mortar products, calcium stearate may still be used. But for exterior walls, waterproof mortars, high-performance tile adhesives, and projects exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw cycles, its performance limitations become more obvious.
Silicone-Based Water Repellent: A More Durable Solution
Silicone-based water repellents, especially silane/siloxane-based powder additives, work in a more advanced way.
In the alkaline environment of cement-based materials, silicone active components can react with inorganic mineral surfaces and form a stable hydrophobic network along the capillary pore walls. This structure helps block liquid water penetration while still allowing the substrate to maintain vapor permeability.
In simple terms, silicone-based water repellent provides hydrophobic protection without completely sealing the pores. This is especially important for cementitious materials, because the system still needs to “breathe” while resisting water absorption.

Why Silicone-Based Water Repellent Performs Better
Compared with calcium stearate, silicone-based water repellent usually offers stronger and more stable performance in several key areas.
First, it provides better control of water absorption. Thanks to improved dispersion and chemical bonding with the mineral substrate, silicone-based additives can form a more uniform hydrophobic effect throughout the mortar matrix.
Second, it helps reduce efflorescence. Since water is the main carrier for soluble salts, lowering water migration also helps reduce salt movement to the surface. This is highly valuable for exterior wall mortars, decorative finishes, tile grout, and cement-based waterproofing systems.
Third, silicone-based water repellent can maintain better strength performance when used at a proper dosage. Unlike some traditional hydrophobic additives that may negatively affect cement hydration, high-quality silicone-based powder water repellents are designed to balance water resistance and mechanical performance.
Finally, silicone-based systems are more suitable for demanding environments. By reducing capillary water uptake, they help lower the risk of freeze-thaw damage caused by water expansion inside pores. This makes them a better option for cold, humid, or rainy regions.
Which One Should You Choose?
If your target is only basic water reduction at a very low cost, calcium stearate may be enough for some simple formulations.
But if your customers require better durability, lower water absorption, stronger efflorescence resistance, and more stable long-term performance, silicone-based water repellent is usually the better choice.
For modern dry-mix mortar manufacturers, product competition is no longer only about low price. More buyers now care about application stability, exterior wall durability, waterproofing performance, and fewer after-sales problems.
