In modern dry-mix mortar and cement-based formulation design, water demand is one of the most important factors affecting final product performance. Many manufacturers add extra water to improve flowability, but excessive water often leads to lower strength, unstable workability, higher shrinkage, and reduced durability.
So, the real question is:
How much excess water are you adding to your current mix design?
At Botai Chemical, we recently put our DEMACSA® P-130C powdered polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer to a strict laboratory test. The result clearly showed how a high-performance PCE superplasticizer can help reduce water demand while maintaining excellent flowability.
Laboratory Test: Same Cement Weight, Same Flowability Target, Different Water Demand
To evaluate the water-reducing performance of DEMACSA® P-130C, we tested the formulation under the same key conditions:
- Same cement weight
- Same 180 mm flowability target
- Different water demand with and without DEMACSA® P-130C
The results were significant.
Without DEMACSA® P-130C, the formulation required 180 g of water to reach a flowability of 180 mm.
With DEMACSA® P-130C, the formulation required only 115 g of water to reach the same 180 mm flowability.
That means the water reduction rate reached:
(180 g – 115 g) / 180 g × 100% = 36.1%
A 36.1% water reduction is not just a laboratory number. For manufacturers of self-leveling mortar, leveling mortar, and other cement-based systems, it means the formulation can achieve strong fluidity with much less water.
This performance reaches the level required for ASTM C494 Type F high-range water-reducing admixture standards.

Why Water Reduction Matters in Cement-Based Formulations
In cement-based systems, water plays a direct role in workability, strength development, setting behavior, shrinkage, and final durability. Adding more water may make the material easier to apply in the short term, but it can also bring hidden performance risks.
Excess water may cause:
- Lower compressive strength
- Increased porosity
- Poorer surface quality
- Higher shrinkage risk
- Unstable flowability retention
- Reduced durability
- Greater difficulty in formulation control
For high-end dry-mix mortar manufacturers, especially those producing self-leveling mortars and leveling mortars, water control is critical. A good superplasticizer should not only improve flowability but also help reduce the water-cement ratio and improve overall formulation efficiency.
What Does 36.1% Water Reduction Mean for Your Product?
For a manufacturer, a 36.1% water reduction can create value in several practical ways.
First, it helps lower the water-cement ratio. A lower water-cement ratio usually supports better compressive strength and improved final performance.
Second, it can help optimize cement dosage. When the formulation becomes more efficient, manufacturers may have more flexibility to adjust raw material costs and formulation structure.
Third, it helps maintain excellent flowability. This is especially important for applications requiring smooth pumping, self-leveling performance, and easy application.
In other words, DEMACSA® P-130C helps manufacturers move beyond simply “adding more water for better flow.” It provides a more efficient way to improve workability while supporting strength and stability.
DEMACSA® P-130C: Powdered PCE Designed for CSA and High-Alumina Cement Systems
DEMACSA® P-130C is a premium powdered polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer specially designed for sulfoaluminate cement, also known as CSA cement, and high-alumina cement systems.
These cement systems are often used in high-performance dry-mix mortar products, but they can also bring formulation challenges such as:
- Low water reduction efficiency
- Poor flowability retention
- Fast setting behavior
- Difficulty in maintaining stable workability
- Unstable application performance
DEMACSA® P-130C is developed to address these challenges. It provides strong dispersion performance, helping cement particles disperse more effectively and reducing the amount of water required to reach the target flowability.
This makes it especially suitable for:
- High-end self-leveling mortar
- Leveling mortar
- CSA cement-based systems
- High-alumina cement-based systems
- Dry-mix mortar formulations requiring high water reduction
- Cement-based formulations requiring improved flowability and workability
Better Flowability for Easier Application
For self-leveling mortar and leveling mortar, flowability is one of the most important performance indicators. The product must spread smoothly, level evenly, and remain workable during application.
Poor flowability can lead to construction problems such as uneven surfaces, difficult spreading, poor leveling, and inconsistent final quality.
With DEMACSA® P-130C, the formulation can achieve excellent flowability with less water. This supports smoother application, better leveling behavior, and improved formulation stability.
For customers developing high-end dry-mix mortar products, this can help improve both product performance and user experience on site.
