Choosing a redispersible polymer powder is not simply a matter of comparing prices or selecting the product with the highest stated performance. The correct choice depends on the application, substrate, climate, required flexibility, water exposure, expected service life, and the overall balance of the dry-mix mortar formulation.
For manufacturers of tile adhesives, wall putties, repair mortars, exterior insulation systems, waterproof mortars, and other cement-based products, polymer selection directly influences adhesion, deformation capacity, crack resistance, workability, durability, and cost control. A polymer that performs well in one formulation may be unnecessarily expensive or technically unsuitable in another.
To help customers make faster and more cost-effective decisions, Botai Chemical has developed a practical selection framework for three major VINNATE® redispersible polymer powder technologies: VAE, SBR, and SA.
Why RDP Selection Matters
Redispersible polymer powder is produced by spray-drying a polymer dispersion into a free-flowing powder. After mixing with water, it redisperses and forms a polymer phase within the mortar. During drying and curing, this polymer phase improves bonding between mineral particles and the substrate.
Different polymer chemistries create different performance profiles. Some grades focus on cost-effective adhesion and general flexibility. Others are designed for stronger elasticity, low-temperature performance, water resistance, weatherability, or long-term durability. The best result comes from matching the polymer chemistry and grade to the real service conditions of the final product.

VINNATE® VAE Series: The Versatile and Cost-Effective Choice
VAE redispersible polymer powder is based on vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer technology. It is widely used in dry-mix mortar because it offers a balanced combination of adhesion, flexibility, workability, and formulation economy.
For standard tile adhesives, wall putties, skim coats, insulation mortars, and general-purpose dry-mix products, VAE is often the most practical starting point. It can improve adhesion to mineral substrates, increase cohesive strength, reduce brittleness, and support more consistent application performance.
Its main advantage is balance. VAE may not provide the highest value in every performance category, but it offers a broad and reliable performance window at a competitive cost. This makes it suitable for manufacturers who need stable quality across high-volume products without overengineering the formulation.
VAE is generally recommended when the application requires dependable bonding, moderate flexibility, good workability, and controlled raw-material cost, especially where extreme weather resistance is not the primary requirement.
VINNATE® SBR Series: Designed for Flexibility and Dynamic Performance
SBR redispersible polymer powder is based on styrene-butadiene copolymer technology. Compared with standard VAE systems, SBR is often selected when the formulation requires stronger elasticity, crack resistance, impact resistance, or improved performance under temperature variation.
These properties make SBR suitable for flexible waterproof mortars, flexible tile adhesives, repair mortars, exterior wall insulation systems, and applications exposed to structural movement or repeated thermal stress.
In low-temperature applications, the polymer’s glass transition temperature is an important consideration. A lower glass transition temperature generally supports better film flexibility at reduced temperatures. Depending on the grade and complete formulation, an SBR-based system can remain more flexible under cold conditions than a conventional general-purpose polymer.
SBR should not automatically replace VAE in every flexible mortar. Final selection must also consider cement type, filler grading, cellulose ether, defoamer, hydrophobic agent, dosage, curing conditions, and the required standard. Nevertheless, when crack resistance and deformation capacity are key factors, SBR is often the stronger technical direction.
VINNATE® SA Series: Built for Exterior Durability
SA redispersible polymer powder is based on styrene-acrylic copolymer technology. It is typically selected for demanding exterior applications where water resistance, weather resistance, ultraviolet stability, and long-term durability are critical.
Exterior decorative mortars, high-performance tile adhesives, façade materials, repair systems, and specialty mortars are exposed to rain, sunlight, temperature cycling, and environmental contamination. In these conditions, the polymer must support not only initial adhesion but also long-term performance after repeated weathering.
SA-based grades can provide strong adhesion to difficult substrates, improved resistance to water penetration, and better stability in exterior environments. They are particularly valuable when the mortar must maintain performance under prolonged moisture exposure or severe outdoor conditions.
Because SA technology is positioned toward higher-performance applications, it should be used where its durability benefits create clear value. For standard indoor products, it may add unnecessary formulation cost. For premium exterior systems, improved weatherability and water resistance can help manufacturers differentiate their products and reduce field-failure risk.
A Scientific Selection Process
Selecting the right RDP Powder requires more than identifying the application name. Two tile adhesives may have very different requirements depending on tile size, substrate, open time, slip resistance, deformation class, water exposure, and local construction practice.
Botai Chemical recommends evaluating five factors before confirming a polymer grade.
First, define the application and target performance level. Is the product a basic wall tile adhesive, a flexible exterior adhesive, a waterproof repair mortar, or a premium façade system?
Second, identify the service environment. Consider indoor or outdoor use, humidity, freeze-thaw cycles, temperature fluctuation, ultraviolet exposure, and long-term water contact.
Third, evaluate the required mechanical behavior. Adhesion strength, flexibility, tensile deformation, crack bridging, impact resistance, and cohesive strength must be considered together.
Fourth, review compatibility with the complete formulation. The polymer interacts with cement, gypsum, fillers, cellulose ethers, starch ethers, hydrophobic agents, defoamers, and other additives.
Fifth, confirm performance through laboratory testing. Technical data are useful for screening, but final dosage and product selection should be validated using the customer’s own raw materials and production conditions.
How Botai Chemical Supports Formulation Development
A reliable RDP supplier should provide technical guidance, grade matching, sample testing, and formulation support—not only a product code and price.
Botai Chemical manufactures VINNATE® RDP using controlled spray-drying technology and provides VAE, SBR, and SA solutions for different mortar systems. Our technical team evaluates the customer’s application, climate, substrate, performance target, and cost structure before recommending a suitable grade.
We help customers evaluate key parameters, including glass transition temperature, redispersibility, water resistance, flexibility, and adhesion performance. This supports stable production, reliable application, and competitive market positioning without unnecessary formulation cost.
The Right Polymer Creates Better Product Value
For general-purpose dry-mix mortars, VINNATE® VAE grades provide a versatile and cost-effective solution. For products requiring higher flexibility, crack resistance, or low-temperature performance, VINNATE® SBR grades offer a stronger direction. For premium exterior systems demanding superior weather resistance, water resistance, and long-term durability, VINNATE® SA grades are often the preferred choice.
